The World Cup starts in 50 days . The question is – who is going to win it ? Do England have a chance?
UEFA president Michel Platini believes only Brazil, Spain and England have the quality to win it. Fernando Torres has said England have “the second strongest XI” after Spain. Following the 3-1 friendly victory over Egypt last month, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It was the best I have seen England play for years. You saw them on Wednesday and you say to yourself, ‘That team has a chance in the World Cup’.”Yet while Sir Geoff Hurst, the hat-trick hero of the 1966 final, agrees England have a strong chance, he feels a lack of depth in the squad ultimately means the “usual suspects” have to be considered the favourites.”Whatever Brazil’s form’s like coming into a World Cup, they’re always going to be around,” he tells Soccernet, “and the obvious favourite if you had to pick one is going to be Spain.
“They’ve got a fantastic midfield and a lot of strength in depth as well. It’s not just about 11 good players. You need 15 or 16 who can come in when others are injured or suspended and so on.”
Hurst was one of a number of squad players to have forced their way into England’s team to make a real impact in the 4-2 win over West Germany and, having kept his place ahead of Jimmy Greaves for the final, he acknowledges that there is “always the possibility” that England could produce another surprise star this summer.

Wayne Rooney has minor ankle ligament injury

England and Man United fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Wayne Rooney confirmed he should be fit in time for the World Cup after Manchester United revealed he had suffered only “minor” ligament damage.

A club statement said: “We’re pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture (to his ankle). The scan revealed only minor ligament damage.”

It is not yet known how many games the striker will miss for United.

His manager Sir Alex Ferguson will give a detailed update on Rooney’s condition and prognosis on Friday . The in-form striker, a key player for England’s World Cup chances, injured his ankle in United’s Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday. He is expected to miss Saturday’s vital Premier League clash against Chelsea.

Medical experts have suggested a minor ligament tear would keep him out for between three and four weeks, but back in time for the World Cup.

On that timescale the 24-year-old would miss next Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final return leg against Bayern Munich, plus at least four of United’s final six league games.

England’s next international is a friendly against Mexico on 24 May at Wembley and their first World Cup game in South Africa is on 12 June against the USA in Rustenburg.

England will play their penultimate World Cup warm-up match against Mexico at Wembley Stadium on 24 May. The game has been arranged to provide England with some opposition from the CONCACAF region ahead of their Group C opener against the United States. England are due to depart for the first of two trips to a training camp at altitude in Austria on 17 May.

Players including Wayne Rooney , who are involved in the Champions League final on 22 May will not be involved in the Mexico friendly. England will also play Japan in Graz, Austria, on 30 May. The World Cup in South Africa starts on 11 June, while England’s match against the US is on 12 June.

Tickets for the Wembley warm-up will go on sale to England members on Friday 26 March before being offered to the general public on Tuesday 30 March. Manager Fabio Capello will name his final World Cup squad of 23 players on 1 June and the following day the squad will fly out to South Africa.

Rooney has revealed he thinks England have had an easy World Cup draw. A key player in coach Fabio Capello’s plans when the tournament starts in June, has probably been suffering sleepless nights since the birth of his first child, Kai. Tiredness caught up with him after United travelled to London on Friday to prepare for the match with West Ham the next day.

“We got to the hotel about five o’clock,” said Rooney. “I laid down on my bed to watch the TV and fell asleep and didn’t find out what the draw was until 10 o’clock. It was a good draw. The US are a good team, I saw them beat Spain in the Confederations Cup. That will be the difficult game, but we should win against the other two [Slovenia and Algeria]. Of course we need to respect them. I don’t know too much about Algeria but I’m sure the manager will have loads of information for us before the game.

We played Slovenia two months ago and won 2-1, so it will be a tough game. But it could have been worse.”
